Unit 2 Overview: Introduction to Poetry

Welcome to Unit 2 of AP English Literature! In this unit, we will be focusing on poetry as well as analyzing techniques used to manipulate diction. We will explore the differences between prose and poetry in addition to how structure can greatly contribute to interpretations within a text.

Throughout this unit, we will analyze various skills involved in understanding poems by decomposing the elements of literature. These elements range from the characterization of figures, interpretation of meanings, manipulation of diction, and recognition of figurative techniques.

In this study guide, we will explore how dramatic situations and imagery play an essential role in helping readers identify characters in a poem.

The primary focus of this study guide will be how a poem's structure, or syntax, helps to develop the author's intentions. Through this craft, readers are able to interpret the overall intended message left by the author as well as conjure possible themes.

This study guide will explore the effects of manipulating the grammar, diction, and tone of a poem. Writers will make deliberate decisions when constructing how these elements link the poem together and, thus, formulate a central purpose or meaning.

The main focus of this study guide will be about focusing on the literary devices and prosody in a poem help to build on the literary analysis of the poem as a whole.
